Breaking the Habit of Procrastination
Procrastination occurs when the sufferer has anxiety, abysmal self-appraisal, and a self defeating mentality.
They are also consumed by perfectionism rather then a realistic appraisal of their responsibilities.
Procrastination can be caused by underlying issues like ADHD and depression.
Types of Procrastinators
There are several types of procrastinators: there is the relaxed type, who think of their responsibilities in a pessimistic manner. This variety of procrastination is a denial. Those that suffer from relaxed type procrastination cannot postpone pleasure and avoid painful activities. They do not appear to be anxious about school and work responsibilities.
The second variety is the tense-afraid type. This variety feels devastated by the pressure, and is unrealistic about time and goals. They have many negative emotions. They believe that they do not have the skills needed to successfully complete the task at hand. They choose relaxing activities but as the deadline comes closer, they become increasingly stressed.
This behavior pattern becomes cyclic and continues to jeopardize the success that they deserve. They withdraw from talking to people who are confident and stop participating in society, ignoring even good friends.
Procrastination and Programming the Subconscious
Procrastination is founded upon learned behavior patterns. It is true, all procrastinators have imbibed the negative procrastination pattern in their subconscious. Procrastination is a malady of many, but in order to solve it permanently, the mind must be reprogrammed.
The longer you procrastinate, the more difficult it becomes to initiate action. Procrastination literally thieves from you your dreams and productivity. Thus, for a fulfilling life it is crucial to overcome this handicap. The subconscious mind takes the negative programming, which must then be removed by introspection.
But all habits can be broken, and we will discuss one method for stopping procrastination in its tracks. A successful response needs to replace the negative habit of procrastination. Make this response your habit, and your mindset will be changed, definitively.
A Method of Breaking the Habit
Make fixing the project or problem your primary concern. Think that your mind is being reprogrammed, and frequently send the thought that you are achieving an important personal goal. Send your thoughts by posting goals on readily seen places, so that the thought remains in your mind. Then, apply the steps, one by one, to complete the personal goal.
Twice a day, think about how you can apply yourself and succeed by achieving the goal. Think about how it will change your live for the better. Think of ability, confidence, and strength. Be proud of your succeeding with your goal. Graphically visualize the “Future Self” and act as if you have already found the goal in your mind.
Working by Small Efforts
You should be action based, so when you reason with yourself and you are making excuses, you should say “stop!”. Tell your conscious mind that you are acting, following through, and being disciplined.
Instead of finding reasons to avoid the work, you are directly giving reasons to do! Disrupt the process of working at what you were putting off, and divide the task into reasonable subtasks that allow you to conserve emotional energy by being easy to do.
Then complete you subtasks one at a time. Do shaping: focus on the small tasks, and complete them successfully. Use them to build your confidence, and then step by step begin to work on the whole, until you can do the whole effectively.
Reinforcing Efforts
Reinforce your efforts by acknowledging yourself for action and improvement. Be aware of the sensation of feeling accomplishment and self-respect you gain as you complete your personal goal.
Bask in the great feeling of accomplishment and reward yourself. Then, the positive confidence, determination, and momentum will build, and your successes will accumulate.
