Are White Teeth Healthy Teeth?

It is pretty hard today to watch a movie and not find a famous celebrity who is flashing a pearly white smile.

Are White Teeth Healthy Teeth?

It is common knowledge that celebrities make more money than the Average Joe, therefore they have access to a lot of things the rest of us do not.

From consulting with nutritionists who help put their diets together; personal trainers to work out with five days a week; to expensive teeth whitening procedures performed by cosmetic dentists, celebrities are able to spend significantly more time focusing on their health and appearance.

However, just because they seem to have beautiful, healthy-looking teeth does not necessarily mean that their teeth are actually healthy.Your mouth is the gateway to your body. Your health is affected by the foods that you consume, as well as other contributing factors such as exercise and sleep.

If your mouth is the gateway, then your teeth are presumably the gate. You can tell a lot about an individual’s lifestyle habits by their smile. Staining, plaque build-up and cavities are all caused by neglecting to properly care for your teeth and making necessary visits to the dentist.

While it is easier to recognize someone who may have unhealthy teeth by observing imperfections, staining and discoloration, it is assumed that an individual with a bright, white smile has healthy teeth. Teeth whitening is very popular in culture today. People spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on enhancing their smile.

While there are numerous ways to whiten your smile, not all methods provide the proper cleaning to care for your teeth. In fact, there are many individuals who whiten their teeth as a substitute for proper cleaning. While your mouth does most of the talking, your smile says way more about you than most people realize.

According to a study by social psychologist Dr. Anne Beall, a bright, white smile indicates wealth, intelligence, career success, and sexual prowess. The study, commissioned by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, asked subjects to make snap judgments based on photos. Some had bright, white smiles and others did not.

As any cosmetic dentist would have predicted, the whiter smiles fared far better. While white teeth are certainly more appealing, it is just as important to have a healthy smile as it is to have a whiter smile. Proper care for your teeth includes regular appointments with your dentist, brushing twice daily and flossing. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet.

It takes work to make sure your teeth are healthy, not just white. While a whiter smile speaks volumes, some patients may be overdoing it. While bleaching kits, home whitening systems, and spa treatments bring a bright shine to even the dingiest smiles, continuous bleaching can wear down dentin and tooth enamel leaving dental nerves exposed and causing sensitivity to hot or cold.

Many dentists have even called for a ban on whitening by non-professionals, spas, and mall kiosks because non-dentists cannot spot a breakdown in dentin in their customers. All bleaching kits strip away some of your teeth’s enamel, but your family dentist should tell you if your teeth are healthy enough for bleaching treatment.

While at-home whitening kits are often less expensive than more clinical treatments, they are done without the input of a dentist. Dentists advise that if you do want to try at-home whitening, be careful not to overdo it.

According to WebMD, if your teeth begin to look blue or clear at the edges, dentists advise that you stop treatment immediately, as this may indicate an unsafe breakdown in dentin. Before beginning any treatment, cosmetic dentists also recommend that you first come in for a pre-treatment appointment to determine if your teeth are healthy enough for whitening.

This will ensure that the story of success and health that your teeth are telling is not a lie.

White teeth do not necessarily mean that your teeth are healthy, though it is not a bad start. Make sure to properly care for your teeth to ensure dental health.

I’m relieved to see sanity here. There’s a huge range between teeth that are whiter than the whites of one’s eyes, and rotten or stained teeth. I doubt anybody naturally has the whitest end of the range, and there is a reason for this. (healthy enamel is not pure white) I loved it when Ross overdid it in Friends, and ever since then I’ve been alarmed at the spread of unnatural dazzlers and the money people seem willing to waste on them!
